He made full use of the British piano for composition and also worked on piano performing, teaching, composing, music publishing and piano instrument manufacturing etc.. At the same time, he participated in all activities related to the development of piano music, and witnessed the prosperity of the music environment in London at that time. He possessed superb piano skills, and was entitled with “ Father of the Piano Technique ”. This study aims to investigate Clementi’s last piano sonata, called “ Piano Sonata in g minor, Op. 50 N0.3 ” Firstly, it discusses the music background and sonatas from the mid eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century in London, England. Moreover, Clementi’s life story, piano works in each period as well as his composing style and the characters of this work are disscussed. Finally, on the aspect of the musical form, melody, harmony, tonality and rhythm of the “ Piano Sonata in g minor, Op. 50 No.3 ” it discusses Clementi’s composing elements. Furthermore, as for the performance, it discusses the interpretation of the piano touch, dynamics, speeds and pedals etc. . The study finds that Clementi’s piano works often use the classical form for musical compositions, and the overall structure is clear. The three movements of the “ Piano Sonata in g minor, Op. 50 No.3 ” all include the particular features of Clementi, such as: singing melody which is coordinated with scattered chords and interval accompaniment; using third chords and octaves as the melody and accompaniment materials; or using chromatic melody, and so forth. In addition, it also applies Canon of Baroque and counterpoint melody, and the vague tonality, inconsonance acoustics as well as extraneous modulation in the Romanticism ages. Composing style is extremely extensive. For the music playing, speed control, dynamic marking, articulation and pedal instructions in music score are all the key elements in the playing, which is also closer to the ideas expression of Clementi’s “ Piano Sonata in g minor, Op. 50 No.3 ”. Through the research of this thesis, it aims to increase the readers’ understanding of Clementi piano music, and to properly interpret this work researched.
