My thesis reviews the impact of these changes on urban life as well as new social arrangements between people. Besides attempting to illustrate, with examples, Henrietta L. Moore's theories on affect theory and ethnic imagination analysis, I have tried to explain how heterogeneous residents live together in the constantly changing city of Zhubei and how new local cultures are created. First, I argue that good "life imagination" is not grown out of thin air. Rather, by analyzing how "good" life images are constructed by the media, I attempt to establish that the promotion of a high-quality living environment should be an outgrowth of a well-considered urbanization policy. Furthermore, I note how both natives and newcomers draw upon family-based ethnic imagination in order to identify change and to create a new sense of identity for themselves. According to my observations, the meaning of family is loosened and reconstructed and the same time; in this way, new family concepts are shaped. In addition, my ethnographic studies of New Wa Wu, female masseuses in Zhubei, and families whose breadwinners are employed at the Hsinchu Science Park attempt to analyze various strategies that different family types use to stay together in our urbanized, globalized 21st century reality. Finally, my thesis illuminates some of the secrets of new Zhubei's growth. It is my hope that my thesis provides a strong example in the field of social transition studies. First, I argue that good "life imagination" is not grown out of thin air. Rather, by analyzing how "good" life images are constructed by the media, I attempt to establish that the promotion of a high-quality living environment should be an outgrowth of a well-considered urbanization policy. Finally, my thesis illuminates some of the secrets of new Zhubei's growth.
It is my hope that my thesis provides a strong example in the field of social transition studies.
