Poor nonverbal cues delivery in instant messaging lowers the communication qualities. The stickers improve the delivery of nonverbal cues in instant messaging. Also, the additional features of stickers are well-loved by people. However, increase the intricacies of the image also increase the difficulty in interpretation. The differences of sticker interpretation between generations could lead to poor communication when stickers are misunderstood.
By the questionnaires, the study investigates the differences between two generations’ comprehension on stickers. Also, finds out the factors cause the differences from the results of the questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. A total of 30 younger participants and 30 elder participants were recruited. The younger generation performed better than elder generation in comprehension stickers and perceived higher comprehensibly on the stickers. By the results of the interviews, we found that the generation culture and experiences relate to the familiarity of the stickers may cause the comprehension differences between the two generations.
This study suggests that the differences of generation cultural and empirical background of the two generations will affect familiarity of stickers which cause the interpretation differences. The experience and the communication pattern of the younger generation increase their familiarity of the stickers. The familiarity relates to memory and cognitive resources improve the ability of the younger generation to integrate the features of the sticker in explanation, and enhance the comprehension of the stickers.
According to the results of the study, the future design should consider different generation cultures and customs to fit different users. For the elder generation, simple stickers with clear facial features are recommended for the designers. Also, avoid inconsistent features in the stickers can reduce the interpretation variety of the stickers. For young generation, topics of the popular culture are encouraged for the designers.
