First of all, the historical context and landscape in Changhua keep local cultural heritage preservation campaigns emerging. The popularity of new media and civil society in Taiwan as well as around the world has a great impact on the constitution and characteristics of volunteers. With the term “heterotopia” as the concept of analysis, I discuss how Changhua Railway Village, as a space of heterotopia, interact with contemporary volunteers. Heterotopia not only refers to the heterogeneous experience inside the space, but also extends to the discussion of the entity, representation, and organization of heterotopia. Heritage preservation volunteers thereby have the quality like professionalization and representation. Although loose in connection, volunteers, as a post-community, can empower each other in collective action. Volunteers implement plans in the public sphere, involved in the national space planning politics. At the same time, they produce local knowledge by conducting cultural resource investigation. I would argue that the embodiment and effective labor form the basis of collective cooperation when volunteers concern the issues in heritage preservation and put them into practice. Besides, volunteers transfer and diffuse local history as well as knowledge of heterotopia by touring narrative, thereby connected with other local railway heritage, and produce their imagination and vision for the future. According to my research, new volunteer phenomenon display the hybridity and constantly changing quality of community at present. The rise-up of “Multitude” indicates a new trend in public sphere in this new age, and the transformation of the way local public engage in cultural heritage preservation campaign.
