Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used in this study. The participants were 45 students in fifth grade in the elementary school located at Taiping District, Taichung City. Ten students were selected based on their responses of the tests for further semi-structured interviewed after self-constructed examinations were given. The results were as follows: About all students in this study: 1.5th graders on the usage of their own prior knowledge performed well on solving “interval problem”. Besides, most of students used iconic representation to solve problems. 2.There were three types of errors in the process of problem solving. First of all, students would not grasp the meanings of questions clearly. In the second place, students could not list mathematics formulae correctly. Lastly, students were careless in solving problems. About those students of high-achieving in this study: 1.Students of high-achieving with iconic representation would process semantic mathematical formulae into images and could draw the icons correctly. 2.There were four types of strategies on problem solving among students of great abilities, including “draw a diagram”, “look for a pattern”, “solve an easier related problem” and “find the relationship”. The most common and extensive strategies were “Look for a Pattern” and “Solve an Easier Related Problem”.
