This study also discusses theories of teaching and learning, and analyzes three teaching materials commonly seen in Taiwan as references. By combining teaching theories and learning strategies, this study attempts to construct teaching materials based upon Natural Approach (NA). In addition, different from conventional teaching designs, this study specifically separated the four essential skills for language learning (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) into two parts: Listening & Speaking, Reading & Writing. Image-based memorization and Total Physical Response (TPR) were incorporated to improve students’ listening, speaking, reading, and writing abilities. The first part, Listening & Speaking, was arranged in the order of vocabularies, short sentences, and dialogues, while the second part, Reading & Writing, started off with simple, easy-to-learn, and practical contents. The goal was to design a set of ‘basic teaching materials for teaching Chinese as a second language’ for foreign beginning Chinese-language learners in Taiwan. Furthermore, for the purpose of examining the feasibility of the design and possible effects, a teaching demonstration was carried out. The results of the post-class questionnaire survey show that most participating advisory committee members recognized and affirmed the intended affects achieved by the design of teaching materials.
