As a consequence, many families are involved in providing care to their elder with increasing needs for respite care and supports at home. Home-care services have been expanded in the past decades as one of the major service support for caregiving families. Few studies have explored the effects of home helper services in buffeting the impacts of caregiver stresses on caregiver outcomes. This study intended to fill up the gap in the literature. The purpose of this study is twofold, first to examine the state of caregiver stressors and their burdens in a group of 450 family caregivers in Taipei City, and second to compare the effects of formal and informal cares in moderating the negative impacts of care-related stresses on caregivers burdens. This research employed a cross-sectional design using the data collected from 450 elders and their family caregivers in Taipei City. Hierarchical regression analyses, using SPSS version 21.0., were carried out to examine and compare the buffering effects of formal and informal cares. The result of hierarchical regression analyses showed that the formal care was able to mitigate the negative impacts by the caregiving stressors on caregiver burden, while the informal care failed, with all the other relative variables, such as demography, stressors, formal and informal care, were controlled. The implication for clinical practices was that formal home helper services were in a need to be boosted by increasing their provision and accessibility, while informal care needed to be enhanced.
