The survey participants were 724 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students from Kaohsiung’s and Pingtung’s senior high schools. The instrument comprised the Motives for Going to College Scale, the Academic Grit Scale, and the Academy Self-control Scale. By performing descriptive statistics, cluster analyses, test of homogeneity of proportions and one-way analysis of variance, it revealed the following findings: 1.In estimating the high school students’ motives for going to college profiles, a four-cluster solution was suggested to be suitable. The four clusters differed from one another on self-transcendent motive, self-oriented motive and extrinsic motive. 2.Grade differences were found in the four clusters of motives for going to college. 3.Gender differences were found in the four clusters of motives for going to college. 4.Socioeconomic status differences were found in the four clusters of motives for going to college. 5.Significant differences on academic grit were found in the four clusters of motives for going to college. 6.Significant differences on academic self-control were found in the four clusters of motives for going to college.
