A total of 772 participants were randomly selected from 91 public schools in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan. In general, participants received democratic parenting and held positive perceptions of their social emotional learning competencies and level of social interest. Statistical significance existed in these perceptions when data analysis took into account of such factors as gender, as well as family atmospheres, the girls’ scores of perceived the emotions of others and the scores of cooperation were significantly higher than boys, the participants of perceived family atmosphere was very harmonious in social emotional learning competencies scale and social interest scale show significantly higher than the others. Whereas family socio-economic status didn’t show significant differences on perceptions of parenting style, social emotional learning competencies and social interest. Different perceived parenting styles had different impact on the participants’ social emotional learning competencies and social interest. According to the results of the study, the scores of self reported social emotional learning competencies and the level of social interest among the participants who perceived the parents’ democratic parenting were significantly higher than those of the perceived parents who took “authoritarian” and “neglecting”. Lastly, there was significant correlation between the perceived parenting style, self reported social emotional learning competencies and social interest. According to the results above, the suggestions for school, family, practice in counseling psychology, and future research were recommended.
