Lastly, to investigate the mutual relationship between social support and happiness. The research utilizes questionnaire investigation method with independent-living elderly persons receiving services from Huashan Social Welfare Foundation centers across Kaohsiung’s 11 administrative districts as research subjects. Purposive sampling is used with 250 questionnaires sent out to a resposes rate of 100%. The data was analyzed through methods such as descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson product-moment correlation as well as stepwise multiple regression analysis. Research conclusions are as follows: I. Overall social support of independent-living elderly persons is at the level of medium to low, with perceived “informational support” and “emotional support” scored higher, while perceived “instrumental support” scored the lowest. II. Overall well-being of independent-living elderly persons is also at the level of medium to low, with perceived “personal relationships” the highest, “life satisfaction” the lowest. III. Participants who are female with better economic conditions, have higher perception of social support. IV. Participants who are female, unmarried, divorced or widowed, have better economic conditions and self-rated health. They also have higher perception of well-being. V. All aspects of social support are positively correlated with well-being, while social support and life satisfaction have the highest correlation p value. Whereas “instrumental support” and “physical and mental health”, “self-affirmation” had relatively lower correlation. VI. Social support significantly regressed to well-being, the dimensions of “informational support”, “social companionship support” and “emotional support” significantly predicted well-being. The study shall provide suggestions in accordance to research findings for government and relevant social welfare organizations to use as practical as well as research references.
