In addition, improvement of Japanese skills does not necessarily lower the possibility of misuse of particles. Specifically, whether Japanese particles, such as shita, shiteiru, shiteita, ni, de, wo, and ga, can be properly used by advanced Taiwanese learners of Japanese has been an underexplored area of research. On the one hand, verbs are generally categorized as stative, duration, and momentary verbs based on meanings, and verb form variations serve as the tense indicator. On the other hand, particles, which move along with subjects and objects in passive voice sentences, are likely to cause difficulty for Taiwanese learners. This study aims to examine whether Taiwanese learners of Japanese are able to distinguish between the verb tense variation and the verb state and whether they are able to use correct particles in passive voice sentences. It is found that Taiwanese learners of Japanese can neither differentiate the variation from the state nor select proper particles. Initially, this study assumes that the better the Japanese proficiency, the better the ability of identifying verb functions and choosing particles. The questionnaire respondents are thus classified into two levels, N1 and N2. The finding indicates that N1 and N2 respondents have no difference in terms of distinguishing verb functions or particles. Therefore, it is recommended that future research further explore the causes of learning difficulty for Taiwanese learners of Japanese. HUANG,AY-LING ZHANG,JIN-TU 黃愛玲 張金塗 2017 學位論文 ; thesis 79
