Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate the association between genetic polymorphisms of Bone mineral density and osteopenia among older adults in Taiwan. Material and methods: In this study, We performed a case-control study and included 418 participants who received health examination in Health Management Center of Tri-Service General Hospital from March, 2015 to August, 2016. For each participant, demographic data were obtained by structured questionnaire, and BMD was measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Results: After adjusted age, sex and BMI, the frequencies of rs4986938 (ESR2) CT genotype were decreased risk of osteopenia than CC genotype (OR=0.43, p=0.004).T allele were decreased risk of osteopenia than C allele (OR=0.49, p=0.006). CT+TT genotype were decreased risk of osteopenia than CC genotype (OR=0.43, p=0.004).The frequencies of rs3801387 (WNT16) GA genotype were decreased risk of osteopenia than AA genotype (OR=0.51, p=0.013).G allele were decreased risk of osteopenia than A allele (OR=0.59, p=0.023). GA+GG genotype were decreased risk of osteopenia than AA genotype (OR=0.53, p=0.013). Conclusion: In the elderly population, rs4986938 (ESR2) and rs3801387 (WNT16) were associated with osteopenia.
