Latah is a culture-bound syndrome which is used as a coping strategy and a form of response by the sufferers to cultural and situational pressures. Latah includes actions which while normally offensive in Indonesian culture, are in that guise accepted and favored by the society. The reason for adopting the particular strategy remains, however, unclear. The present study aimed to discover the reason Latah people choose and use Latah as a coping strategy within the specific cultural and social context. Seven participants were involved in this research, in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. This research was a qualitative study with in-depth interviews as the tool to collect the data. The result proposes that Latah emerged as a coping strategy, affected by environmental cues, perceived control, stress, perceived harms and benefitsby the person, and is particularly tailored to the cultural and social environment of Indonesian communities
