Hui chose to create new elements in her movie by using Chang’s original as the foundation and presenting it from a unique feminine perspective. She integrated her delicate thoughts, sensitive insights, and made this grandly touching movie - Eighteen Springs. Therefore, Ann Hui’s interpretation of Eileen Chang’s Ban sheng yuan is worth discussing and studying. First of all, the novel’s theme, making of characters, and plot arrangement were analyzed for their literary connotations. Secondly, Ann Hui’s family background and experience was introduced, and the influence of “The Hong Kong New Wave” on her was analyzed. Hui’s directing style is then brought up by thoroughly listing her works and achievements, as well as the art of her filmmaking. Thirdly, the theme Hui intended to convey, the plot development, and her understanding and tolerance of human nature were discussed by looking into the movie’s theme, characterization, and unfolding of the story in Eighteen Springs. Fourthly, by studying the use of colors and lights, the way that Hui used colors to present a vintage and nostalgic Shanghai. How she presented the movie’s content was also analyzed by discussing the shot and screen arrangement. She presented the span of time with the montage approach, so that the movie is more compactly structured. Voice over technique was used extensively to keep the story moving. Fifthly, the novel Ban sheng yuan and the movie Eighteen Springs were compared and contrasted. Adaptation of the novel for filmmaking results in intertextuality between the two. When Hui made her movie adaptation from Ban sheng yuan , she held the director’s right of interpretation. When she chose to create new elements in her movie, similarities and differences between the novel and the movie emerge. In this thesis, the writer expects to sort out the literary connotations of the novel Ban sheng yuan, discuss Ann Hui’s artistic and directing style for filmmaking, analyze Hui’s interpretation of the novel and use of filmmaking techniques in her movie adaptation of Eighteen Springs, and list the similarities and differences between the novel and Hui’s movie adaptation.
