For the purpose of research, literature analysis and expert interview were first conducted to analyze the care tasks that often result in occupational injuries in the long-term care centers. Second, experts were invited to demonstrate the proper operation in tasks that involve heavy load and likely to result in occupational injuries, including change of posture, getting into/out of bed/wheelchair and assisted-dressing/undressing, and provided consultation. Relevant self-support technology was introduced to two long-term care centers as a pilot program. Finally, focus group interviews were conducted to understand and gather the feedback from the staff, the elderly and the family members who participated in the pilot program. The main findings from this study are as follows: 1. When providing services that involve change of posture, getting into/out of bed/wheelchair and assisted-dressing/undressing, if a caregiver is in a bad posture, with wrong application of force or improper operation or poor use of aids, occupational injuries, such as fall, intervertebral disk injury (lumbar injury), wrist sprain, knee joint deterioration, shoulder and neck joint injury, ankle sprain and other injuries, are likely to occure. 2. The staff, the elderly and the family members were positive about the overall effectiveness of the self-support care service, and believed that it can enhance the elderly’s trust in the caregivers, improve the elderly’s ability to live independently or semi-independently, reduce the caregivers’ work pressure and lower the incidence of occupational injuries.
