After the book “Yi Zhou Shuang Ji” was published, the Northern Inscription became popular and attracted considerable attention and Bao built up his own calligraphy theory. However, the concrete practice of Bao’s calligraphy has not been accepted widely and the succeeding researchers has doubted his contribution. Based on these viewpoints, it is necessary to do a further research on Bao’s calligraphy theory and thought. Our study supports that Bao’s theory is from the Northern Inscription, and the works of Bao and his mentor, Deng Shi-ru, reveal the sequence of Bao’s calligraphy. Moreover, the discussions of the past researches show that Bao’s achievement is not highly exaggerated and later readers can understand his calligraphy theory and thought further. The book “Yi Zhou Shuang Ji” could carry on the past heritage and open up the future in the development of the Northern Inscription and provide insight and inspiration for the common practice of calligraphy in late Qing dynasty.
