Therefore, the study utilizes the Theory of Protecting Infant Industry and Theory of Strategic Trade Policy to analyze the reason for various ASEAN countries interfering with the regional trade liberalization progress in the automotive industry. The study results reveal the setbacks experienced by the automotive industry in AFTA. At the same time, the study also examines the industrial security related problems encountered during the building process of AFTA, where the automotive industry is used as the case study to discuss the influence of AFTA on the member countries’ industrial security, as well as the measures adopted by respective member countries in protecting their national industrial security.
