Affected by the traditional religious belief custom, a series of religious rites is essential and burning incense is one of the indispensable rites. However, lots of air pollutants are caused by the burning of incense in these religious rites, which may affect the local air quality and damage the health of the residents serving in the temple for long time or living near the temple. This research applied Personal Environmental Monitor (PEM) to collect the airborne particulates (PM2.5) and the sampling period is from November, 2015 to October 2016, with each sampling time of 8 hours. In different seasons, PM2.5 concentration and heavy metal concentration of incense in temples in Taichung and Chiayi were analyzed and ICP-OES was used to analyze the concentration of 12 heavy metals in the samples. According to the research results, among the 4 temples, the highest and lowest average concentration of PM2.5 is respectively in D Temple (340.1 ug/m3) and C Temple (216.2 ug/m3); the temple’s average concentration of PM2.5 is far higher than the indoor average concentration of one university of science and technology, and it is mainly because there are too many incense burners in the temple, the temple has poor ventilation and air diffusion is difficult, causing the too high concentration. The proportion of PM2.5 heavy metal and incense primary metal is roughly the same. Therefore, the burning incense is the main source of pollution in the temple.
