The floral design is a kind of formative art, which has different styles in the Est and the West. The western style values the absolute “forms” while the eastern style based on the unique Chinese culture pursues the relative “forms.” The pieces produced with the absolute forms present the identical features; the pieces made with the relative forms show various characteristics under the different spatial and temporal influences. Based on the 30-year study of the Chinese floral design, the article researches on and extends the design as well as combines creation and theories. Generally speaking, the Chinese floral design has three categories; (I). According to expression and posture, the classic and basic principles that emphasize objectivity can be categorized into: upright type, slanting type, flat type, horizontal type, pendent type, and synthetical type. (II). For the floral containers that play the main role in a piece, there are vase, dish, jar, bowl, bamboo cylinder, and basket. The six floral containers that have different features are the unique categories in the Chinese floral design; their functions and appearances are unique. They carry their own features. (III). According to the attitude for creation, there are: Li, Xiang, Qi, Shu, which mean Intellectual, Realistic, Expressionist and Formative. The four categories also include the types of artistic expression. The concepts, arrangement, interest, and ethos within are no different from other art pieces. Except for their own values, these works also reflect different aesthetics of environment and thinking in different times. Not only learning from the past and from the wisdom of the ancestors, the research also digests the cream to create the pieces that represent the spirit of the modern environment and thinking.
