Description
Summary:博士 === 逢甲大學 === 中國文學系 === 105 === Most previous studies on popular songs, whether explorations of rhyming or of mood, tend to focus only on lyrics, and few are conducted with a joint consideration of lyrics and melody. However, lyrics are part of the music. If we separate lyrics from music, we are left only with a collection of words; these may be poems or pieces of prose and are unrelated to music. To explore the relationship between lyrics and melody, this study takes traditional verses and opera as its theoretical basis and Mandarin Chinese popular songs released during the period 1949-2017 as its research scope. Content includes the phenomenon of reversing word order, rhyming, rhyme shifting, and pattern-changing rhyming, in addition to the mood of voice and expression in popular songs. Our study is conducted through a joint consideration of these two areas of music; our research methods include lyric collection, listening surveys, phenomenon analysis, and phenomenon interpretation. Lyrical analysis is conducted for all the musical examples explored in this paper. Furthermore, in our final results, we explain how popular music has recycled ancient rhyming culture and applied the techniques of traditional Chinese opera, with the goal of making music harmonious and interesting. In addition, we propose recommendations for pop music with regard to lyrics, melody creation, and performance, in order to improve the quality of popular songs.
