At present, landslides continue to occur in this area. Satellite images reveal the unique geographical position of the Lishan landslide area. The tectonic plates are under constant lateral compression from different directions. In the landslide area, rocks in the shear banding zones with highly brittle fractures result in horizontal displacement of the mountains and highly variable ground elevations. The streams are also extremely winding. However, these rock characteristics have not been mentioned in past investigations. Therefore, monitoring and remediation plans have been made based on only past landslides, road construction, agricultural development in the mountainous areas, and the rise of the underground water table. The landslide mechanism is evidently different from the failure mechanism of rock slopes in the shear banding zone, and the adopted shear strength parameters are also different. The result is that although significant expense has been incurred in the remediation, slip failure of laminated hear zone rocks in Lishan landslide area occurs every a few years according to historical satellite images. When the real reason behind these incidents is clear, the monitoring and remediation plans need to be modified to a large extent to ensure that funding is put to good use and the yearly remediation target can be achieved.
