The thesis aims to analyze the career development of rainbow men: gay male hairdressers. Noting that the customers’ stereotyping of and antipathy to rainbow men have hindered the career of gay male hairdressers, how they overcome difficulties and express themselves are key to understanding their career progress. This thesis intends to examine 1) their career choice; 2) how they negotiate with the traditional gender role; 3) how they break through the obstacles, elevate themselves, and earn the trust of customers; and 4) how they realize self-growth. Questions closely related to the issues include: 1) How do gay male hairdressers make career choices and progress? 2) How do the personal characteristics of gay male hairdressers conflict with the traditional gender role? 3) How do gay male hairdressers confront the dilemma and improve themselves? And 4) How do gay hair dressers set career goals and realize self-growth?
The thesis centers on three gay male hairdressers, analyzing their career development through literature review, in-depth interviews, and participatory observation. It discovers that, in today’s open society and changing culture, they choose their careers regardless of public opinion and comments. They not only display personal styles and bisexual charm, continually improve their professional skills, but have also attracted many customers, successfully solidified their loyalty, and created their own stage. However, their families’ and the society’s expectation of their gender role have posed numerous challenges to their career. This thesis hopes to illuminate their career progress, while offering a reference for further discussions on the rainbow men.
