Summary: | 碩士 === 嘉南藥理大學 === 化粧品應用與管理系 === 105 === This research aims to investigate the effect on heart rate variability and pressure before and after applying pure or compound essential oil after exercising. After exercising on the treadmills to activate sympathetic nerve, heartbeats accelerate and the rate of respiration increases. After taking a 15-minute break, pure essential oil (sandalwood) or compound essential oil (sandalwood and lavender) is applied. Then pressure is analyzed via an electroencephalogram and cardiac rhythm is analyzed via a heart rate variability analyzer. Once stopping exercising, activity of sympathetic nerve stops quickly and parasympathetic nervous activity has increased. With applying pure and compound essential oil, the effect of the process of heart-rate recovery and modulation of brain wave regulation are discussed. This research is conducted in one junior college in southern Taiwan. 10 students are randomly chosen, exclusive of those who have asthma and history of heart disease. The data of physiological parameters of heart rate variability (HRT, PSI, TP, VLF, LF, HF, LF/HF) in the pre-test where essential oil is not applied and the pro-test where either pure or compound essential oil is applied, along with brain wave index (fatigue index, concentration, relaxation, pressure) being detected. The result shows that after applying pure essential oil (sandalwood), students’ physiological parameters of heart rate variability (HRT, LF, LF/HF) and the index of concentration, pressure and fatigue received via the electroencephalogram have decreased but not obviously. It shows the effect of pure essential oil (sandalwood) on activating parasympathetic nerve is not obvious. However, physiological parameters of heart rate variability VLF, LF had decreased but not obviously after applying compound essential oil (sandalwood and lavender). The data collected via electroencephalogram show the pressure index decreases while relaxation index increases, with statistical significance (p<0.05). Applying compound essential oil (sandalwood and lavender) increases parasympathetic nervous activity, particularly for effect of relaxation on pressure.
