Recently, raising the awareness of environmental protection makes the people more demanding for the port environmental quality. Hence, this research investigates the environmental risk perceptions and risk communication of residents living in neighborhood of Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan. Using surveyed data collected from questionnaires, the Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) model was used to examine the research hypotheses. The Social Amplification of Risk Framework (SARF) was used to examine the interaction and process between the psychological behavior and social cultural of the resident in Kaohsiung port for the environmental pollution risk events.
There are several important findings in this analysis. First, environment risk characteristic, physical environment factor, psychological factor, social trust factor and social economy factor were found to show influential effects upon risk perceptions of residents. Second, the residents are willing to understand the current situation of pollution and they will have a high risk perception. Third, the residents have a high risk perception and they will suggest talking about the pollution situation. Finally, we proposed several suggestions for government and port industry to gain supports and trust of residents.
