Summary: | 博士 === 長庚大學 === 生物醫學研究所 === 105 === Iron plays essential roles in the pathogenesis and proliferation of Trichomonas vaginalis, the causative agent of high prevalent human trichomoniasis. However, little is known about the adaptive responses and survival mechanisms of T. vaginalis upon iron deficiency. We demonstrated that nitric oxide (NO) accumulated in iron-deficient condition and proposed that NO was generated by a ubiquitin-proteasome-dependent pathway in T. vaginalis. NO plays a cytoprotective role in maintaining the quality and quantity of hydrogenosome and thus kept cells from death upon iron deficiency. Iron deficiency reduced hydrogenosomal energy metabolism.
