This study was focused on the anti-oxidation activity and inhibition of tyrosinase activity of Dunaliella salina . In the first part, the carotenoids in the Dunaliella salina were isolated and purified as main components as lutein, zeaxanthin, α-carotene, trans-β-carotene and 9-cis-β-carotene by high performance liquid chromatography. The 9-cis-β-carotene was the most abundant part of carotenoids in Dunaliella salina. The results showed that the antioxidant activity of 9-cis-β-carotene was the best among the other components from extracts of Dunaliella salina. The third part of the thesis was to determinate the influence of these components on tyrosinase activity. It was found that 9-cis-β-carotene had the highest inhibitory effect. In comparison with kojic acid (an posiitive control in tyrosinase assay), 9-cis-β-carotene beared stronger inhibiting effect than kojic acid at low concentrations (20 ppm). Also, our data on inhibition of tyrosinase showed in accordance with experiments with a pricey method using commercial Tyrosinase Inhibitor Screening Assay Kits.
