The illuminating composition of the Luu-2B/B aircraft parachute flare was adopted as a standard formula with a weight percentage of Mg/NaNO3/binder=30.9: 61: 8.1, and Taguchi's experimental design method was used to design 9 experimental formulas by way of orthogonal array with 4 control factors and 3 levels. At first NASA Code (CET-86) was used to simulate the thermodynamic properties of combustion reaction of illuminating flare compositions. The weight percentage variation of these three components on the influence of the temperature and enthalpy of combustion was analyzed, and the reaction products and their mole fractions on the influence of the burning performance was explored. Afterward, the thermochemical characteristics were studied using thermal analysis techniques by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TGA). Lastly, the actual luminous intensity and burning rate of these experimental formulas were measured by means of flame photometer test apparatus, and the compositions of formulas on the influence of the combustion performance were analyzed from experimental data. The experimental results indicated that the optimal formula for long-acting illuminating flare composition was the weight percentage of NaNO3/Mg= 1:2, the binder content 7.1%, additional 6% of Na2C2O4 and the particle size of Na2C2O4 less than150µm, and its luminous intensity (32976 cd) and burning rate (1.81 mm/s) were better than the Luu-2B/B aircraft parachute flare.
