At present, literature probing nurses' retention is quite abundant, mostly focusing on factors like wages, benefits, supervisors' leaderships, organization atmosphere, etc. However, the impact of workplace violence on job satisfaction and nurses' retention is under researched. Hence, this thesis aims to explore the co-relationships of nurses' job satisfaction, retention and workplace violence, and investigate the intervention of workplace violence in job satisfaction and retention in a district hospital in Hsinchu city. The study targets at 297 nurses who have worked over three months, and uses purposive sampling to conduct the cross-sectional study by giving questionnaires issued and recovered from Feb. 22 to March 21. The effective response rate is 99%. What followed was descriptive statistics, independent t-testing, analysis of one-way variance and regression analysis in order to analyze the data. The study shows that: (1) in the past one year, nurses have suffered workplace violence, with verbal violence accounting for the highest percentage, 39.7%, physical violence the second highest, 23.9%, sexual harassment 6.4%. On the whole, patients or their families are the main source of violence (37%-83%). The reporting rate is 61.3% if nurses are confronted with workplace violence, and the overall satisfaction rate is 3.14. (2) As for job satisfaction, those who have work experience of more than 11 years, who work in the OB/Peds clinics and who are entitled head nurse are more satisfied with their jobs. As for retention, those who are aged over 41, married with two children, whose work experience is more than 11 years, who work in the OB/Peds clinics, whose rank is N3, and who work in the day shift have higher retention rate. As for workplace, those whose son work experience is between 7 and 10 years, whose rank is N2 and who work both afternoon and midnight shifts suffer from the most workplace violence. (3) nurses' job satisfaction has positive influence in their retention while workplace violence has negative intervention in job satisfaction and nurses' retention. Verbal violence has negative impact on extrinsic job satisfaction, work place also has negative impact on job satisfaction, and work place violence has negative impact on nurses' retention. The study result can serves as a reference for hospital supervisors and nursing heads to improve the problem of work place violence, so as to nurses' job satisfaction and retention.
