Environmental Education has been in place for many years. However, currently main focuses center on conservation of natural resource. Under the government’s policy of promoting historical sites preservation, educational institutions of all levels and local agencies have proposed various plans of historical site preservation. How to transform education into an important force of maintaining cultural asset has become a topic worthy of further research.
Mai Liao from Yunlin County is a town along the coast. Some of the featured industries are agriculture, fishing, livestock, and Formosa Plastics Corp (FPC) sixth naphtha cracker complex, giving the town its uniqueness. Among the important cultural assets, Kong Fan Temple, has become one of the National Historic Monuments and religion in coastline area. Temple has also preserved some of very important architecture heritage. Therefore, during the process of repair work, these documents and data are not only treasured by elder generation, but also required appropriate management. Also, all of the relevant document could be used as teaching materials for students and environmental education lessons.
This research investigates materials used by an elementary school from Mai Liao and discusses environmental education relating to cultural assets, for example, treating Kong Fan Temple as an important site of environmental education. Through investigating the stories, temple space, traditional architecture technology skills and combining preservation efforts of historical architectures, this research analyzes the integration of historical site itself and surrounding environment and proposes a direction for the design of environmental education teaching materials. An elementary school has been chosen as the target of action research. This research pointed out the importance of historical site preservation to environmental education and study.
This conclusion has shown that environmental education can reverse the adverse conditions imposed by the decline of local culture and children’s’ unfamiliarity with their hometown cultural assets. During the process of conveying local cultural development, Kong Fan Temple can propose a cultural asset environmental education platform to work with academic units through the concepts of technology and industry-academic cooperation to compile the education material of local culture. Furthermore, make the space of culture assets that could be useful in environmental educational available to academic units and becoming the educational sites. Full implementation of the accreditation of cultural asset environmental education and advocacy targeting elementary school are both viable means of lifting the cultural literacy for Mai Liao citizens.
