Summary: | 碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 建築與室內設計系 === 104 === First established by Sung-Sing Kwan in 1920 in Tianjin, China, Kwan, Chu & Yang Architects & Engineers was the largest private architectural firm in northern China in the early twentieth century. After Mr. Kwan came to Taiwan with the Kuomintang government in 1949, he set up the firm again in Taiwan. This study aims to compare the development of Kwan, Chu & Yang Architects & Engineers in Taiwan, with the development of postwar Taiwan architecture, through interviewing senior architects and employees, analyzing blueprints and on-site investigations. The goal of this study is to present the characteristics and the influence brought forth by the first generation of Mainland-originated architectural firms in the postwar Taiwan. Kwan, Chu & Yang. Architects & Engineers applies the system it established in Mainland China to incorporate architects from Mainland China and local professionals who are more familiar with conventional construction methods in Taiwan. Through such incorporation, Kwan, Chu & Yang. Architects & Engineers was able to obtain public projects in the postwar Taiwan, set the cornerstone for future development.
In terms of style, the chief architect system allows Kwan, Chu & Yang. Architects & Engineers to have different styles for each period of time. The variety of styles, hence, becomes a main feature of the company. Kwan, Chu & Yang. Architects & Engineers set up a comprehensive work system for professionals behind the drawing tables and on the construction sites. The blueprints are comprehensive and detailed, providing on-site personnel with information for proper supervision and construction. The designated supervisors are entitled to set the cost during the process of construction, so that the quality of constructions can be guaranteed. In sum, Kwan, Chu & Yang Architects & Engineers may not be the only Mainland-originated architectural firm that reestablished itself in Taiwan after WWII, yet its ability to adopt the system built in Mainland China and incorporate both Mainland-originated and local professionals, along with Mr. Kwan’s association in politics ensured that the firm can take part in the postwar United States Aid public projects, allowing the firm to develop and thrive for 28 years.
Kwan, Chu & Yang Architects & Engineers brings forth many architectural professionals, who then educate the next generation of professionals through teaching or setting up architectural firms. Sung-Sing Kwan’s effort and contribution in building a professional and cultivating architectural firm has brought much influence on the postwar architecture development.
