碩士 === 國立雲林科技大學 === 建築與室內設計系 === 104 === National policy developments have led to an increased focus on craft culture promotion. To help the public gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s craft culture, the Taiwanese government plans to introduce craft culture using different craft exhibition space. Because craft museums and craft workshops, two different types of craft exhibition space used to promote craft culture, have been built under different historical backgrounds, they have different objectives and policies, are funded by different sources, and display different scales of construction. To effectively convey craft-related information, the two types of craft exhibition space employ different design strategies for their spatial functions, spatial allocation, exhibition purposes, and methods of presentation. Differences in such strategies subsequently produce different effects on the overall exhibition. Previous literature details some of the achievements that had been made in craft culture, craft museums, and exhibition space; however, studies on craft exhibitions and related spatial designs remain scant.
Therefore, this study investigated the exhibition space of the two types of exhibition buildings (i.e., craft museums and craft workshops). Using basic study data and those obtained from field studies, this study compared the spatial planning and design (space design) strategies employed by the two exhibition space and identified relationships between exhibition design objectives and exhibition methods. This facilitated understand dingon spatial planning and exhibition designs used to exhibit crafts as well as fill gaps in craft exhibition and spatial design-related research. The conclusion of this study is as follows:
1. Spatial Planning and Design
Craft exhibition spaceis used for various functions such as exhibition, sharing, education, showing videos, creating artwork, selling merchandise, working, storing items, receiving guests, providing refreshments, resting, and washroom functions. Of all of the functions of craft exhibition space, exhibition and communication-based exchanges are the most crucial. Exhibition space of craft museums features in dependent and structured spatial composition, which engenders a sense of orderliness for visitors. By contrast, the exhibition space of craft workshops contains complex integrated spatial functions and unstructured spatial composition, which creates a sense of familiarity and comfort for visitors.
2. Relationships Between Exhibition Design Objectives and Exhibition Methods
Craft exhibition space primarily uses tangible mediums such as texts as well as video and audio formats to convey craft-related information to visitors. Such information includes fundamental craft knowledge, craft techniques, heritage and continuation of craftsmanship, craft-related artwork and achievements, and craft applications. Communication-based exchanges are subsequently used to supplement exhibitions and enhance the promotion of craft culture, thus demonstrating a support iverelationship In addition, by allowing visitors to create their own artwork, receive craft-related education, and purchase craft-related merchandise, they will be able to gain a deeper understanding in to craft-making environments, the practical application of crafting skills, and the use of crafts in daily life.
Overall, spatial all ocation and exhibition purposes show that craft museums adopt a professional and distanced exhibition model, whereas craft workshops adopt an amicable and friendly exhibition model. By building the two types of craft exhibition space, visitors will be able to learn about craft culture from craft museums and crafting techniques from craft workshops, enabling them to gain further knowledge into the unique characteristics of each type of crafts. Craft museums and craft workshops thus complement each other.
