Summary: | 碩士 === 臺北市立大學 === 數學系數學教育碩士在職專班 === 104 === This study investigated the effect between parents’ participation and Mathematics attitude on TIMSS 2011 fourth-grade student mathematic assessment- "geometric shapes and measures" to understand the TIMSS 2011 "geometric shapes and measures "test performance of the Taipei private elementary school fourth grade students with different parents’ participation and different Mathematics attitude.
The research subjects were fourth-grade private elementary school students in Taipei city. The research tool was the partially publicized TIMSS 2011 test items. The sources of the quantitative data are questionnaire survey and retesting of test items. The data was analyzed by one-way ANOVA. Parents’ participation and Mathematics attitude are two independent variables, the partially publicized TIMSS 2011 Mathematics assessment result is the dependent variable. We want to explore the effect of parents’ participation and Mathematics attitude towards Mathematics achievement. After retesting, two students from the good, average, and poor performance groups respectively were selected for a semi-structural interview to understand the possible factors that may affect their test performance. The findings can offer practical suggestions to teachers in mathematical teaching. The results of this study are as follows:
1. More than 80% of the research subjects indicated that their parents were concerned about their academic performance. Also more than 80% of the research subjects indicated they like math and have a positive attitude towards learning.
2. The students’ corrected percentage on the research test questions is fairly close to the sampled Taiwan fourth-grade students’ accuracy rate on the TIMSS 2011. But the students’ accuracy rate on the research test questions is higher than the sampled Taiwan fourth-grade students’ accuracy rate on the TIMSS 2011.
3. The students’ different parents’ participation and different Mathematics attitude showed no significant differences on the test performance.
4. Factors that may affect the students’ test performance are: failure to understand the test meaning, miscalculation, unclear problem-solving concepts, and insufficient experience in solving math problems.
