This report aims to explore the art song Histoires Naturelles (1906) which was written by the French composer Maurice Ravel(1875-1937). Ravel wrote this work based on the five poems which were selected from the collection of poetry anthology Histoires naturelles(1896) by the French classics composer Pierre-Jules Renard (1864-1910).
This report will begin with introduction of Ravel's career being a composer and Renard’s life time, and to explore the music style, the background of the creation, contents of the literature, and the characteristics of the work to further understand the connection between contents of the verses and the piano part. The melodic lines in Ravel’s early vocal works were more undulating in vocal parts, such as 1903's Shéhérazade. Different from his earlier composing techniques, the vocal lines in Histoires Naturelles was arranged to match with the special rhyme of the poetry in French, thus creating the talking-like melodic lines, and illustrating main characters’ stories and characteristics of the five works in a whisper singing way. And the piano part then cleverly presented in musical composition with characters‘ personalities in the poetry. Ravel emphasized the connection between the vocal line and the piano part, combining the melody and the rhyme intimately. By discussion and studies in the report, the author would like to understand more about the development and connection of music and literature in musical compositions.
