The part accuracy using traditional shearing process can not satisfy the accuracy fit requirement, and must be machined second times, such as milling, grinding, etc. The machining time and cost may be increased. In this study, the punch plate of compound dies was machined by using electrical discharge machining, EDM. This is to improve the shearing cross-section flatness, and accomplish the shearing operation and accurate-abrasive processes similarly in one punch cycle. First, five types of material including SUS304, Brass 1/2H, SS400, Copper 1/2H, and AL5052, were used to compare the difference of cross-section flatness. As a results, the cross-section flatness of SUS304 is the worst, so stainless steel was chosen as experimental material in this study. Secondly, Taguchi method L9(34) orthogonal array was used to find the optimal processing parameters containing four control factors: die clearance, shearing speed, inner striper plate reaction force, outer striper plate compress force. Results show that the better cross-section flatness obtain when the die clearance is 0.01 mm. Finally, punch plate was machined to different EDM amount (shaved amount) and EDM depth.
