Carcamo 碩士 國立臺北科技大學 管理國際學生碩士專班 (IMBA) 104 This research thesis investigates the possible synergies and role of foreign direct investment (FDI) in small island developing states (SIDS) such as Belize. This issue on (SIDS) has been neglected until recently. The main reason for the lack of interest is of no surprise, given the general neglect of issues relating directly to SIDS and low absolute volume of capital flows involved. However, for (SIDS) such as Belize, (FDI) Foreign Direct Investment represents an important additional source of investment capital and a potentially critical contributor to growth and development and most convenient strategies for many companies investing abroad. This research represents one of the first attempts to analyze the decision, willingness or determinants of the inflows of (FDI) from Taiwan’s perspective to (SIDS) Belize, incorporating insight drawn from recent research on the determinants of growth in small states. Moreover, the research is conducted with the objective of creating awareness through the findings and, most importantly, to encourage the Government of Belize to re-evaluate the allocation and redistribution of funds within the tourism industry. With this awareness and social enhancement of the country, foreign investors become more interested in setting up their business in a tourism-friendly oriented country, thus attracting the much needed Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) for any developing country. This research is empirical as it is aimed at analyzing the disposition effect of willing investors, and to provide entrepreneurs and businessmen with vital information on whether Belize (BZE) possess a strong and healthy economic environment and opportunities for investment and undergoing business in Central America Belize. Belize has indeed become one of growing attraction for visitors and investors from all over the world as it offers some opportunities for investment and business in a country that is rich in natural resources and possesses beautiful landscapes, is blessed with a hard-working people and has become an important commercial hub. Belize also offers a number of inducements to invest one of this is the Corozal Commercial Free Zone, in which wholesale and retail companies enjoy duty-free treatment as well the tourism industry. Today, tourism is a global trade and has been responsible for the serious rise/fall of many economies around the world. (Doswell 1997) For many developing countries like Belize, it has replaced agricultural products as being the major or most important source of revenue for the country, emerging as a new motivation for economic growth, given the ability to generate much needed foreign exchange and employment. Therefore, a survey approach will be used to collect both qualitative and quantitative data from Taiwanese entrepreneurs. The majority of the data will be collected using survey and interviews. The data will then be analyzed using the STEEPLE analysis with other information collected using additional methods, such as secondary research and group feedback. The results will be expected to follow similar findings stating that: Taiwanese entrepreneurs motivation for investing in Belize includes exploring nature, culture and history, and local food (Kwan, Eagles, Gebhart, 2008). However, the final results will reflect that the most influential determinants are Ownership Rights, Favorable Tax Climate, Qualified Retirement Program (QRP), and Taxes and IBC’s. which only partially supports the expected hypothesis. 吳斯偉 Shih-Wei Wu Chief officer, Overseas Students Advising Section, Office of Student Affairs Associate Professor, Department of Business Management, National Taipei University of Technology PhD, U of Southampton (UK) 2016 學位論文 ; thesis 0
