In vehicle industry, internal combustion engine technology keeps evolving and derives more energy-efficient technologies which reduce vehicle fuel consumption. Also in addition to the evolution of internal combustion engine technology, each vehicle manufacturer was also offering different displacement petrol and diesel engines providing more customer choices. In the sales market, manufactures need to constantly compete between various brands to maintain the brand in market competitiveness and market share. But at a limited cost and available resources, engineers must provide vehicle designs that enable the company to achieve the cost considerations. This could quickly evaluate the design of next modified model with the company’s target customers and market position. This study will analyze the Prius hybrid system with components sizing optimization, including engine, motor, and battery. First of all, Matlab Optimization toolbox principle and function usage will be introduced. Through optimization toolbox Fmincon function, the components sizing-optimization is simulated. Then, the structure of vehicle simulation software ADVISOR and the simulation description of vehicle data are introduced. With the components sizing optimization, the fuel consumption improves 9.7%. This research could provide designers a fast evaluation of the construction of the vehicle powertrain which effectively shorts the vehicle development period and brings down the development cost.
