With the progress in technology and crafts, improvements on chip production make it possible to downsize parts. The application for robots has transformed gradually from industrial to household robots. The study of Human-Robot Interaction has been gradually increasing. Personal space will be affected by the environment we live in, the situation we under and the relation we have with the other. This study is aimed to the interrelation between the robot heights and personal space. This study uses stop-distance method to discuss whether seated subject’s personal space will be affected by robots heights. Hope to provide some reference direction on household robot design in the future.
The subjects can be divided into two groups in the study. One is having zero HRI distance during the experiment and the other is keeping certain HRI distance. While performing the analysis on the HRI distance, compare with strangers, subjects tend to allow robot to come close to their personal space. In terms of approaching direction, subject needs more HRI distance while being drawing near by robot of different heights. When robot is moving closer from diagonal direction, subject is open for smaller HRI distance. In relation to the interior space from the subject’s position, subject demands more HRI distance when robot with different heights coming toward from oblique direction, while subject has its back against the wall and a corner. On the basis of robot height, when robot with different heights comes close to the subject from various directions, the heights of the robot will impact the subject’s personal space significantly, which demonstrates that robot height will influence the personal space on the subject.
