We hope this study provides a reference for manufacturing management that intents to adopt or already developed automation, to make the final or adjustment decisions, and furthermore, for automation system integrators to review the assessment criteria while providing suggestion to clients; thus to ensure more efficient output on proposing automation, assessing the implementation requirement and evaluating investment efficiency. In this article we review the definition of automation, purpose of adopting automation, performance appraisal and current key findings; then develop the study architecture based on the review. As the relevant research is a new subject, reference literature is not much; it is difficult to obtain more information. Therefore the analysis will focus on below aspects: production quality, production efficiency, cost effectiveness and manpower resources to discuss the key factors impacting factory automation implementation. In this research the Delphi method is used to summarize the expert opinion about the factors which cause the success of factory automation. And then, the Analytical Hierarchy Process is utilized to identify the key successful factors of factory automation corresponding to the different dimensions including production efficiency, production cost, quality and human resources.
