However, stories are rarely used in nowadays social studies teaching in Taiwan. In this study, storytelling was employed as a way to convey target knowledge to third graders. An action study was taken to understand students’ learning performance in a storytelling-integrated social study course, and the difficulties teachers may encounter when attempting to integrate storytelling into the instruction. Sixty-four third graders were involved in the study. Classroom observation, field notes, and artifacts were collected to evaluate and analyze students’ learning. Findings of this study included: (1) the incorporation of stories into teaching enhanced students’ concentration and understanding of the content; (2) stories were useful in enhancing students’ motivation which led to better learning performance; (3) stories made social science teaching more efficient; and (4) the professional knowledge and ability of the teacher can be enhanced by integrating storytelling into social science instruction.
