Method: The data were from 2014 and 2015 Tobacco Hazards Prevention Program in Schools held by Public Health Bureau of Nanto. This study enrolled first year junior (n=5,369) and first year senior (n=4,731) students as the study population. Current smoking behaviors of these students in 2014 were firstly analyzed. Those non-smokers were subsequently followed up 1 year to explore related factors of emerging smoking behaviors. Result: In the cross-sectional analysis, it shows that 91 (1.7%) students were current smokers among 5,369 seventh grade students. Girls were less likely to be smokers (OR=0.39). In the longitudinal analysis, 121 (2.9%) among those 4,172 non-smokers had smoking behaviors in the subsequent 1-year follow-up. Significantly related factors included studying in schools awarded for health-promotion (OR=1.56) and living in areas with a higher population density (OR=2.02). Among the 4,173 tenth grade students, 283 (6.0%) students were current smokers. Girls (OR=0.21), vocational high school students (OR=6.71), studying in larger size of schools (OR=0.47) and living in areas with a higher population density (OR=2.22). In the subsequent 1-year follow-up, 147(4.0%) among those 3,634 non-smokers had smoking behaviors. Significantly related factors included girls (OR=0.42), vocational high school students (OR=2.73), studying in schools with a higher smoking rate (OR=2.71) and living in areas with a higher population density (OR=0.42). Conclusion: Sex, smoking rate in schools, local population density were significant factors associated with smoking behavior of high school students. Because the smoking rate in schools is modifiable, we suggest schools make more efforts in building up a smoke-free campus in order to decrease smoking behaviors of high school students.
