In order understand the development of this technology, this study adopts a patent-based approach to analysis the technological development around the world. Our results include a series of comparative analyses on number of patens, R&D ability analysis, and technological life cycle analysis. Content analysis includes national aspect, enterprise aspect and technological aspect. The thesis investigates developmental tendency of the relational technology of driverless car, and through the patent technology to find out the leader of the technology and potential competitors. The research will base on the technology abilities of driverless car to study out tactics; it can be referenced on the R&D direction in the future. In the autopilot technology, Hitachi Company is ahead of other companies. And its potential competitors are Ferrari Company and Hyundai Company. Suggesting that potential competitive companies imitate the patent layout of autopilot technology of Hitachi Company, perhaps, using the approach of technology alliance to find out the companies who have had related patent of each driverless car technology to technology alliance.
