碩士 === 東吳大學 === 英文學系   === 104 === Lu Xun’s unique writing style and techniques such as the contrast between classical Chinese (wenyanwen, 文言文) and the vernacular (baihuawen, 白話文) and the usage of Chinese classic allusions pose a great challenge to his translators. In addition, in his works, the cultural elements of the Shaoxing, Zhejiang (浙江紹興) are also important and cannot be ignored while translating. This thesis applies Han Vermeer’s skopos theory and Lawrence Venuti’s concept on the translator’s invisibility as a theoretical frame to analyze four English translations of Lu Xun’s Ah Q Zhengzhuan (《阿Q正傳》). The analysis focuses on the translators and their positions in translation, hoping to promote the importance of the translator in the translation process. This thesis firstly finds the purposes of translating of each translator from the paratext such as the translator’s biography or the preface in the translation and analyzes how the translators are affected by their purposes in the translating process. This thesis also compares the strategies employed in the translation of cultural terms in the four translations, trying to find the translation that better conveys the original and also to offer other possible strategies in the translations of cultural terms for future translators.
