Summary: | 碩士 === 東吳大學 === 社會學系 === 104 === After Mao claimed that Chiang Kai-shek was “enemy of the people” in 1947,
Chiang fled to Taiwan and died in 1975. Mao didn’t order to attack this island to
capture the “evil traitor”. On the other hand, Lin Biao, Liu Shaoqi, these “closest
comrade-in-arms and successor” of Chairman Mao are dead in internal political
struggle. “Who are our enemies/ friends?”
This thesis begins with the quote from Chairman Mao: "Who are our enemies?
Who are our friends?" The knowledge about Friends and enemies is stated and
decided by political leader. However, could a leader simply choose anyone to be
his/her friends or enemies? I believe the statement regarding enmity is not concerning
who we should fight, but to locate the relatively position between characters. In other
words: "The enemy is our own question as Gestalt."
For the noble reason to stay or struggle to specific position, Chairman Mao has to
estimate the situation at present, and then selects words and sentences carefully. The
circumstances keep changing, which make the behaviors of politicians look like
dramas. In view of this, I take these texts as separate scenarios for the same historical
event. With the concept of Foucault's Archaeology, I compare different memoirs and
statements of Mao. The goal of this research is not search for a real Mao Zedong, but
to see the dynamic relation among Mao and his enemies/friends, and try to answer
this question: What’s the importance of holding high the banner of Mao Zedong
Thought ?
