First, request letters by university students in Taiwan and Japan with their own mother languages were analyzed to compare any their differences in using pragmatic strategy. Then a cross-sectional study on the request letters from above versus the request letters written in Japanese by the junior and senior students of Japanese major in Taiwan was conducted. Condition regarding the usage and acquisition of pragmatic knowledge on the intermediate and advanced level Japanese learners of university students in Taiwan was analyzed based on following 4 major factors. (1) Usage and sequence of strategies. (2) Usage of request expression. (3) Usage of conjunction. (4) Sentence-end expressions. Result shows pragmatic competence of intermediate and advanced learners are in different stages of development. Their written requests exhibit various features of inter-language. Intermediate learners reduced the occurrence of pragmatic transfer after becoming advanced. And their pragmatic competence gets close to native Japanese speakers. This study also identifies difficult part of acquisition for Japanese learners in Taiwan. Besides indicating the importance of inputting enough pragmatic knowledge, the result also provides suggestions of teaching request letter written during Japanese education class in university.
