However, the device is expensive and can’t be applied to small gears and non-circular gears. The pitch curves of non-circular gears are different with each other due to the various applications. Non-circular gears are so sensitive to parameter variations. At present, there is no relevant development of gear parameter detection system for the non-circular gears. The measurement of non-circular gears is more difficult and time-consuming than the measurement the circular gears because of the additional parameters and variable pitch curves. So, the image processing technology is applied to detect the parameters and precision level of non-circular gears in this thesis. The characteristics of shape contours are captured and calculated for the detection of gears outside diameter, root diameter, the tooth thickness, etc. Thus, the results of this research provide reliable method to measure the non-circular gears and also can be applied in the measurement of circular gears and other complicated geometry.
