碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 藝術管理與文化政策研究所 === 104 === This dissertation explores the functions of Shuyuan through the activities of nowadays Independent Bookstores. By examining oral interview transcripts, diplomatic papers, institutional records, newspapers, and trade journals, this research connects the disparate histories of Shuyuan in elucidating the formation and evolving roles of the Independent Bookstores as a contemporary transformation – to show “Reading” as a power for forming cultural public sphere in Taiwan. This dissertation proposes a reconsideration of the wider dynamics of cultural public sphere and its implications on the transformative experiences of cultural production in Taiwan. This dissertation discuss the 4 functions of Shuyuan: Lecture (teaching), Books Collecting, Worship, and Community Land (the income from which was used to support Shuyuan). And reveals the cross-disciplinary and transnational dialogues of a multipolar, intellectual Shuyuan and Independent Bookstores in formal and thematic interventions that would compare the functions of them in case to reveal one possibility of the formation of cultural public sphere.
