Summary:碩士 === 國立臺灣藝術大學 === 書畫藝術學系 === 104 === Kaburaki Kiyokada(1878-1972) is a representative figure of artists who were active during the Meiji, Taisho and Showa period. His paintings compromise customs of Edo and Meiji period and figure painting, and have won numerous awards in exhibitions, receiving acknowledgement. During the eighty years to Kaburaki Kiyokada's painting career, he painted mostly illustrations before becoming a professional painter, and for twenty year, between 1987to 1917, his illustrations were popular among the readers and publishers of the time. First, the life and background of Kaburaki Kiyokada will be discussed in chapter two, with the memoirs of Kaburaki Kiyokada and published books of his life in the early ages, his painting career is briefly organized. Chapter three analyzes the beginning of Kaburaki Kiyokada's career, how his artistic cultivation, family, friendship and teachers later contributed to his achievement in painting. Kaburaki Kiyokada's painting career included illustration, xylograph, kuchi-e, and Japanese painting, chapter four focuses on analyzing characteristic and style of his Japanese painting, from the beginning of his career to the Japan after war, the impact of Kanto great earthquake of 1923, and the influence under hundreds of contending artists. Analyzing his artwork from ukiyo-e to modern painting, composition and theme choices, conveys the classic Edo and Meiji period while expressing emotions of narrative and character, comparing with mid-Edo ukiyo-e and the artist's trait and style, his artwork in government held exhibitions, the appreciation, achievement and characteristic of his artwork established something fresh. Lastly, art critiques and scholars' comment on Kaburaki Kiyokada and his influence in Japan's art society, manifested Kaburaki's importance of tradition and innovation from period of chaos to peace.
