For satisfying rapidly increasing data rates, small cells are deployed in LTE-A. However, it also introduces additional challenges in interference management, resource allocation and seamless handover (HO). Particularly, HO performance, severely impacting the quality-of-service in heterogeneous networks (HetNets), has become an open issue because of high-frequent HOs and intolerable handover failure (HOF). Thus, the special architecture of Control-/User-plane (C-/U-plane) split is proposed and currently discussed in for third generation partnership project (3GPP) technical specifications. The deployment of C-/U-plane split networks can achieve high capacity enhancement and reduce the frequent HOs problem. Therefore, we propose the pioneering handover (PHO) scheme which integrates carrier aggregation (CA) and dual connectivity (DC) techniques to reduce the handover failure (HOF) rate and improve transmission throughput with the C-/U-plane split architecture.
