Many of Crumb’s works include music of the western art-music tradition, hymns and folk music, non-Western music and his own compositional ideas. The thesis mainly discusses the diverse facets of sounds and instrument arrangement through researching on Crumb’s Unto the Hills. The thesis is divided into 6 chapters: chapter 1“research motivation"explains the motivation, purpose, and the methods as well as the structure of the research; chapter 2“the overview of Crumb’s life and musical styles"narrates his life, compositional and music education background in short, while his important works are according to his different instrumentation; chapter 3“Crumb’s musical language"makes a description of important composers using graphic notation and their works as well as Crumb’s compositional techniques; chapter 4“an analysis of Unto the Hills"includes the respective analyses of all movements as well as the analysis of the entire work; chapter 5“the fulfillment in my own compositional ideas"is the application after the writer finishes the research of Unto the Hills; chapter 6“conclusion"summarizes the thesis, and the writer proposes her thought after the research.
