According to the classification of sentences with “Gei” in the thesis “A Study on Several Problems of sentences with ‘Gei’” written by Cheng-Xi Liang (2005) in Fudan University, the researcher analyzes Chinese Textbooks 1 to 12 offered by Kang-Xuan Press and the Chinese supplementary materials of remedial teaching of Ministry of Education for Grades 1 to 6, and the compositions written by the 5th- and 6th-graders of the same class in one elementary school in East District, Tainan City; the sentences with “Gei” are found and classified based on the transmitted messages and meanings. It analyzes the sentences according to “Content analysis” and the role that the sentences with “Gei” play. The following is the analysis of the three sources mentioned above divides the uses of the sentences with “Gei”: 1. In the Chinese teaching materials of Kang-Xuan edition, there are 60 sentences with “Gei”; among them, the most are the sentences of “Gei” for “transmitting specific things, the ones for “strengthening disposal” are the second, and the ones for “transmitting abstract contents” are the next. 2. In the Chinese supplementary materials of remedial teaching, there are 40 sentences with “Gei”, the most are the sentences of “Gei” for “transmitting specific things”, the ones for “expressing more than two behaviors” are the second, and the next are the ones for “transmitting abstract contents” and “strengthening disposal”. 3. Among the works of five-graders, 46 sentences with “Gei” are actively used; the most are for “transmitting specific things”, the ones for “transmitting abstract contents” are the second, and the next are the ones for “expressing more than two behaviors”. 4. Among the works of six-graders, there are 52 sentences with “Gei”; most of them are for “transmitting abstract contents”, the ones for “transmitting specific things” are the second, and the next are the ones for “expressing more than two behaviors.” 5. Among six-graders’ works, there are passive sentences with “Gei” which never appear in Chinese teaching materials. The study results mentioned above show that there is a close connection between the editing of Chinese textbooks and children’s language learning. After learning Chinese teaching materials, children are able to use the sentences learned in their compositions and integrate their own life experience into the language skills. The editing of sentences with “Gei” in Chinese textbooks is from specific to abstract, which conforms to childrens’ cognitive development course. As for practicing sentence patterns, different contexts should be offered for pupils’ practicing different sentence patterns, which enables pupils to use the word “Gei” more precisely and flexiblely.
